Why a professional social networking portrait?

Ok, social networking goes so far beyond Facebook!  Sure Facebook is the biggest, baddest, trendiest thing out there for now- I use it every day.  But, there are so many other services- say Linkedin.com – yeah, “Relationships Matter.”

What about Eharmony.com and the like?  Yeah, singles really are finding their forever-partners doing the online dating and match up thing.  You tell me which is better at communicating that you care about yourself and others.  A professional, digitally mastered portrait or that shot from your iPhone turned around of you in your sweatpants, washed out, done-for-the day attitude?  No, don’t you dare go there; like option #2 is the “real” you. It is only PART of you and absolutely not the first impression part, please!

How we present ourselves on social networking sites is core to how we are going to perceived and received.  Image counts. Something to think about anyway.

To retouch or not to retouch

One of the most-asked questions I hear from potentially new clients is, “Do you retouch/edit the photos?”  My answer is, “Yes!”  There’s a bit of controversy out there about whether or not this is being honest with the audience.  Fundamentally, headshots and other commercial photography is about marketing.  Marketing is about selling.

We live in an emotional and visually driven world.  Most successful sales people get that appealing to potential clients on an emotional level is where the $$$’s are at.  One of my broadcast professors put it this way, “Whatever you don’t do, ALWAYS strike the emotional chord.”  That’s what images are supposed to do for us- strike an emotional chord and that’s what I strive for with my clients- help them strike the right emotional chord with their audience.

So yeah, I ALWAYS edit/retouch photos before they can be called finished product.  In fact, camera’s and lights are generally just not overly friendly to faces so in my opinion at least some retouching is going to be required on every image.

In the days of film shooting (yes I’m all digital,) a photographer would labor intensively over his film and images in the darkroom, retouching, applying chemicals to adjust the color.  Today I do the same thing, in my digital darkroom sans the nasty chemicals. I labor over the images I create- it is this artists side of me, the perfectionist side that can get me into trouble with my business manager.

And where an Artists Series portrait is concerned, there is generally a great deal of editing.  Photography is about the art of seeing.  First I see the end product in my minds eye, then I use the raw materials- the setting, background, lighting to form the raw image.  The fine workmanship happens in the darkroom- my digital darkroom.

To retouch or not to retouch?  There is no question in my mind.

Vilma Halstead – Business Portrait

Vilma is an amazing business woman in our community who has a heart of gold.  I have  a couple of looks for her but I like this one set against a neutral gray background- really brings her naturally warm skin-tones.  Hmmm… I may add another shot of her isolated against a white background- she’s wearing some pretty stylin’ specs that make it really great image.

Dick Bennink – Business Portrait in Eugene, Oregon

Welcoming & open-  this is achieved by setting the pose so Dick is looking slightly upward to his audience.  He is isolated against a pure white background which is great for websites and print applications alike.  The original image has no border- I’ve added this border to set the image apart from the background.

Clarence Williams – Musician, CD Cover

Clarence is an amazing cat- so incredibly talented on the drums, just brings that funk/soul to life!  His band, PrimeXample is hard at work putting together their own originals and Clarence wanted to be prepared with some marketing material and a CD Cover for his self-titled release.  They’re going to be playing Eugene summer 2011. New Site Design Launched!

We got it done!  Welcome to the new site and yep, it’s all blogish and just really simple- love that!  I don’t know about what you’ve experienced, but my dealings with tech lands me in this whole love/hate relationship.  I mean, on one hand I can ‘geek’ out on new tech, but I can also trip out on a rant when it doesn’t go my way.  Websites can be that sort of love/rantish thing.  When they work, they’re great marketing stuff- when they break, it makes me want to stomp around in circles then throw myself to the ground kicking the air like a 5 year old pitching a fit.   Too much information?  Nuf said. Thanks for your patience in the process and here we are!
